Dr. Wayne Dyer:How I Stay Positive/"I Can See Clearly Now"

Dr. Wayne D. Dyer, a beloved motivational speaker, reflects on his life and what he’s learned from its ups and downs in his inspiring new memoir, I Can See Clearly Now. Read his Parade.com guest blog post on how to stay positive in the dead of winter below.
As a native of Detroit, I’m very familiar with the long, cold winters that come with living in the great state of Michigan. But even as a child, I never let them get me down.
My mother’s favorite story about me involves one frigid, slushy morning in December when Mom, my two brothers, and I were waiting for the city bus near our home. We kids were dressed in our snowsuits, mittens, galoshes, and earmuffs, standing next to what appeared to us to be a huge mountain of freshly plowed snow.
A truck drove past the four of us, spraying us so hard with slush that we were knocked off our feet. We landed safely, but soaked on the gigantic pile of snow. My mother broke down—she was dressed for work and covered with dirty, salty, slush. My brothers were upset, too. Me? I was having the time of my life. This was like a nice surprise party with a big castle of snow that we were all lying on top of. We can have fun, I thought! I didn’t quite understand why everyone was so angry and frustrated.
“It’s okay, Mommy,” I said. “Don’t cry. We can all just stay here and play in the snow.”
My mom told this story again and again over the years. She found it much funnier in retrospect! According to her, I was the most independent and inquisitive little boy she and her family had ever encountered. Apparently, I arrived in the world with this happy disposition intact, and it seems to have endured through the years.
This episode and many more appear in my new book I Can See Clearly Now which relates the significant episodes in my life so far and proposes to share with readers my way of viewing life through the lens of gratitude and love. How do you see the events and circumstances of your life—do you see barriers or do you see blessings?
You can learn to see and appreciate all the ways that life has stepped up to guide you, teach you, and comfort you when you needed it. I somehow always knew that attitude is everything in life. Lying on top of that snowbank with the rest of my family and deciding to make things more bearable by laughing and inviting them to have fun instead of being sad, was my first baby step toward helping others break free of negative thinking and enjoy life to the fullest.

For many years, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer’s fans have wondered when he would write a memoir. Well, after four decades as a teacher of self-empowerment and the best-selling author of more than 40 books, Wayne has finally done just that! However, he has written it in a way that only he can—with a remarkable take-home message for his longtime followers and new readers alike—and the result is an exciting new twist on the old format. Rather than a plain old memoir, Wayne has gathered together quantum-moment recollections. In this revealing and engaging book, Wayne shares dozens of events from his life, from the time he was a little boy in Detroit up to present day. In unflinching detail, he relates his vivid impressions of encountering many forks in the road, taking readers with him into these formative experiences. Yet then he views the events from his current perspective, noting what lessons he ultimately learned, as well as how he has made the resulting wisdom available to millions via his lifelong dedication to service. As a reader, you will feel as if you are right there with Wayne, perusing his personal photo album and hearing about his family, his time in the service, how he writes his best-selling books, and so much more. In the process, you’ll be inspired to look back at your own life to see how everything you have experienced has led you to where you are right now. Wayne has discovered that there are no accidents. Although we may not be aware of who or what is moving the checkers,” life has a purpose, and each step of our journey has something to teach us. As he says, I wasn’t aware of all of the future implications that these early experiences were to offer me. Now, from a position of being able to see much more clearly, I know that every single encounter, every challenge, and every situation are all spectacular threads in the tapestry that represents and defines my life, and I am deeply grateful for all of it.” I Can See Clearly Now is an intimate look at an amazing teacher, but it also holds the key for seekers on a personal path of enlightenment. Wayne offers up his own life as an example of how we can all recognize the hand of the Divine steering our individual courses, helping us accomplish the mission we came here to fulfill.
