Downton Abbey In Haunted Highclere Castle

From Parade Magazine, January 5, 2013 "Downton Abey A - Z" by Jason Lynch:

KING TUTANKHAMUN

The Egyptian ruler has a connection to Highclere Castle:  His tomb was discovered in 1922 by the fifth Earl of Carnarvon and his colleague Howard Carter, and Highclere houses replicas of items found there.  Though this history won't intersect with Downton's story line, "everybody on set talks about the house being haunted," says Shirley MacLaine, who plays Cora's (Elizabeth McGovern) mother.  Cora is the Countess of Grantham.

The show's exterior and above-stairs interior scenes are shot at Highclere Castle, 90 minutes from London in Hampshire.  Owned by the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, the 6,000 acre estate has been in the family since 1679 and has a reported value of $240 million.  Up to 1,200 visitors tour Highclere each day it's open to the public.
